Triple honours for Kakariki House

2 November 2009

Kakariki House, the Hamilton home of the Wise Group, has won triple honours at the 2009 New Zealand Architecture Awards.

SEKTA Architects accepted the Waikato Bay of Plenty Architecture Awards for Sustainable Architecture and Commercial Architecture and the Resene Colour Award at the awards dinner on Friday night [30 October 2009].

Judging panel convenor John Sexton described the standard of entries for the 2009 awards as excellent. He says it was encouraging to see an emphasis on sustainable architecture right across the board.

In accepting the award Kakariki House was acknowledged as more than a building – rather an environment which was energising and uplifting, as well as Waikato’s first official green star building. The judging panel praised the way the Kakariki House architects had “breathed new life” into the former retail store to provide flexible layout, shared meeting places and much admired interior design.

The New Zealand Architecture Awards were established by the New Zealand Institute of Architects to celebrate the innovation, creativity and excellence of architectural projects nationwide.

Winners of the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Awards will now become eligible for consideration for a New Zealand Architecture Award, decided by a national jury, which includes an overseas judge, in early 2010.
